The Optica Publishing Group highlighted a paper published by Wyant College and UArizona faculty with industry partners, Nikon, Northrop Grumman and L'Garde. The paper “Modeling and Characterization of OASIS Inflatable Primary Antenna by Dual Modality Metrology” discusses the concept of a 14m aperture inflatable space observatory and its feasibility study focusing on the primary inflatable mirror.

Welcome to two new staff members in the NSF-ERC Center for Quantum Networks! Julie Des Jardins is the new NSF-ERC Center for Quantum Networks Director for Diversity and Culture of Inclusion. Chaohan Cui is a recent PhD graduate from the Wyant College and returns as the new CQN Tuscon testbed manager. Read more about Julie and Chaohan. Each spring, the Wyant College of Optical Sciences recognizes incredible students, as nominated by professors and peers and selected by a faculty and staff committee. Congratulations to Lauren McCaffrey (Outstanding Senior), Charles Condos (Outstanding Graduate TA), Derek Burrell (Outstanding Graduate Student), Trenton Brendel (Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor) and Francisco Flowers (Wildcat Award) as the 2022-2023 Outstanding Students of the Year.

Congratulations to all the students taking on exciting roles as SOCk and WiO officers. We cannot wait to see what the upcoming school year holds.

Explore the science of light at the International Day of Light celebration! On May 21 Optics Valley and Flandrau Planetarium & Science Center will host free planetarium shows and optics activities for families, teachers, and science enthusiasts of all ages.

Matt Eichenfield, Wyant College SPIE Endowed Chair and Associate Professor as well as Distinguished Faculty Joint Appointee at Sandia National Labs, was recently featured in the All Things Photonics podcast on Tuesday, May 16th. Listen to the podcast here.

Dalziel Wilson, Assistant Professor, was awarded the NSF CAREER Award, for his proposal, "Torsional Quantum Optomechanics." The project explores a new landscape in quantum optomechanics opened by the recent discovery of ultra-high-Q torsion nanoresonators in Wilson’s lab. Additionally, Dal will oversee the creation of a new laboratory course for the QISE (Quantum Information Science & Engineering) Master's program.

The spring class of 2023 celebrated their graduation and induction into Wyant College's distinguished alumni ranks on May 11. A large congratulations to the graduating students, their families and instructors. High-resolution images are now available for download.
