Dr. Travis Sawyer Awarded Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award
Dr. Travis Sawyer, assistant professor at the University of Arizona’s Wyant College of Optical Sciences, has been selected as a recipient of a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program supports international exchange by providing opportunities for U.S. faculty and professionals to study, teach, conduct research, and international partnerships.
Administered by the United States Government and established in 1946, the Fulbright Program is one of the world’s most respected international exchange initiatives. With more than 160 collaborating countries, the program aims at strengthening global partnerships and promoting mutual understanding through education and research.
Dr. Sawyer leads the Biomedical Optics and Optical Measurement Laboratory at the University of Arizona, where his research group focuses on developing and applying optical technologies for healthcare and medical research. His work includes the development of endoscopic systems for the minimally invasive detection of cancer using spectral and polarization imaging combined with machine learning, as well as applications of label-free microscopy such as digital pathology. The laboratory’s research spans applications in cancer and brain imaging, with an emphasis on translational research that bridges laboratory innovation and clinical use.
Reflecting on the significance of the award, Dr. Sawyer shared:
“Now more than ever it’s important to facilitate international cooperation, and scientific research is an avenue to strengthen those partnerships. I’m excited to participate in the Fulbright program and to have an opportunity to contribute to that effort in the context of optics and photonics.”
Dr. Sawyer’s receipt of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award further highlights the University of Arizona Wyant College of Optical Sciences’ continued commitment to global engagement and international collaboration in optics and photonics. Congratulations Dr. Sawyer!
