OSC Colloquium: Peter Rakich, "“Mixing Light and Sound Using Engineered Brillouin Interactions”" Oct. 28, 2021 Peter Rakich In recent years, acoustic phonons have emerged as a powerful resource for signal processing, precision metrology, and quantum information processing. In this talk, we explore methods for controlling and shaping the interactions between photons and acoustic phonons as the basis for both classical and quantum information processing applications. OSC Colloquium: Travis Sawyer, "Title: Identifying the Spectral Fingerprint of Disease..." Oct. 28, 2021 Travis Sawyer Our efforts include developing advanced imaging instrumentation, conducting optical characterization of cancerous tissues, and implementing cutting-edge algorithms for automatic tissue classification. Ultimately, these technologies could enable sustainable, minimally-invasive screening of cancer, leading to improved patient outcomes in a wide range of disease treatment scenarios. Read more

OSC Colloquium: Douglas Shepherd, "Scalable, high-speed, 3D imaging of molecular biology in action" Oct. 14, 2021 Douglas Shepherd I will discuss our recent efforts to reduce uncertainty in quantitative molecular imaging through improvements to the optical methods and computational tools used for high-speed, high-resolution, multiplexed, and volumetric fluorescence molecular imaging. Our efforts include a high numerical aperture oblique plane microscopy framework for 3D spatial transcriptomics in human tissue and a digital micromirror-based structured illumination microscopy framework for live-cell, sub-diffraction limited imaging. OSC Colloquium: Matthieu Bloch, "Towards Covert and Secret Quantum Networks" Oct. 14, 2021 Matthieu Bloch We will discuss the possibility of deploying quantum key distribution that are also covert, in the sense of being provably undetectable by an adversary. While covert key generation over quantum channels is not possible under the same assumptions than QKD, we will show that, perhaps surprisingly, covert secret key generation is possible under mild assumptions regarding the quantum channels.
