SOCk Community Speakers: Dr. Benjamin Cromey

When

noon to 1 p.m., Oct. 7, 2022

Where

Benjamin Cromey is a senior optical engineer at Ball Aerospace, and is the optical design and analysis lead for the Wide Field Instrument on the Roman Space Telescope. He completed his Ph.D. in Optical Sciences and Engineering in 2020 at the James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. Dr. Cromey has served in a variety of volunteer roles across the scientific community, including SOCk and the college as a student, and now SPIE, Optica, and the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation as an early career professional.

Dr. Cromey's talk will focus on the Wide Field Instrument (WFI) on the Roman Space Telescope (RST), which is the primary science instrument on the telescope, a 300-megapixel focal plane assembly (FPA) that will enable capturing images with the same resolution as the Hubble Space Telescope but with over 100x the field of view. This presentation will cover an overview of the Roman mission, and give a detailed introduction to WFI. The main optics of the element wheel assembly in the instrument will be discussed, including predictions for their performance in orbit, and discussions on requirement verification.

As always, we will be providing free pizza for everyone who attends this special event!
