Warrior Scholars Project Introduces Veterans to Optical Sciences for the Second Year in a Row
At the beginning of August for the second summer, Jay Kueny, optical sciences PhD student, led a small team of veterans as part of the Warrior Scholar Project (WSP). The WSP, hosted by the University of Arizona and other universities nationwide, is a rigorous two-week program designed to help motivated veterans transition into undergraduate studies. The first week focuses on humanities, followed by a week of STEM work.
This year three veterans participated in the optical sciences focus: J.G. Woolridge, Andrew Suarez and Josh Gandarilla. Jay welcomed the students to the college and introduced them to the basics of optical sciences, as well as a few exciting and more focused aspects they could investigate. After four days of work in the optical sciences labs each veteran created a 12-minute presentation, which they delivered to their peers and the Warrior Scholars Project organizers at the end of the week.
Congratulations to Jay for another successful year, and congratulations to the participating veteran students who had the opportunity to explore the fascinating field of optics.
