Supriya Roy, a junior undergraduate majoring in Optical Sciences and Engineering with a minor in Mathematics, has been selected as a 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholar, one of the most prestigious national awards for undergraduates pursuing research careers in science, mathematics, and engineering.|

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards the scholarship to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, research potential, and a strong commitment to advancing knowledge in STEM disciplines. Selection as a Goldwater Scholar places Roy among a distinguished group of students recognized nationally for their promise as future scientific leaders. As a junior awardee, Roy is eligible to receive up to $7,500 in scholarship funding for her senior year.

Roy emphasized both the national scope of the award and the support she received along the way. “This is a unique opportunity to be connected with like‑minded undergraduates who are pursuing academic research careers, and it is an honor to represent the UA Optics community on a national level,” she said. “I am grateful for the support of the College and my mentor, Dr. Travis Sawyer. This award will support my continued research in the field of biomedical optics.”

The Goldwater Scholarship is widely regarded as a significant predictor of future success in graduate education and research. Roy’s selection underscores the strength of undergraduate research and mentorship within the Wyant College of Optical Sciences and highlights the college’s continued contributions to developing the next generation of scientific researchers.
