OPEN POSITION - OPTICAL ENGINEERING / SPECTROSCOPY INTERN

Point of contact: Terje Skotheim, tskotheim@lightsensetechnology.com

Lightsense Technology manufactures handheld optical spectrometers to detect narcotics and are used by first responders / law enforcement / security personnel to detect the presence of Fentanyl or Methamphetamine in fake pills and unknown powders.

Lightsense Technology is developing a next generation product that will expand the current technology to include detecting all illicit drugs as well as certain applications in biospectroscopy. The R&D team has an immediate opening for a part-time (potentially full-time) Optical Engineering / Spectroscopy Intern (full-time summer 2027 and beyond) for optical design, fabrication & testing, and to develop and manage a spectroscopy data repository.

The position is open to students currently enrolled in optical sciences (or other closely related field). Graduate students (Master’s or PhD) are preferred. The start date is flexible but is expected to begin as soon as possible. The work may be a suitable topic for a Master’s thesis.

Position Title: Optical Engineer / Spectroscopist

Pay: Graduate interns are paid $25 per hour with an expected commitment of 10-15 hours per week on site (35hours during summer).

Role and responsibilities: Work semi-independently to take spectroscopy data of various substances using benchtop spectrometer systems for research and development purposes using an understanding of how to optimize spectrometer and spectral parameters to inform future device design.

Expected Qualifications and Skills: Graduate students actively pursuing MS or PhD are preferred. Exceptional Senior undergraduate students with the desired skills who are planning to begin graduate school at the University of Arizona within the next year will be considered.

Experience with Zemax or CODE V needed to support optical designs.

Experience coding in Python preferred to support processing of spectroscopy data.

Candidate must be authorized to work in the USA and pass a background check.

Interested candidates should reply directly to Terje Skotheim, President, Lightsense Technology (tskotheim@lightsensetechnology.com) with a short statement of interest and how your background will help you succeed in the position.
