Tours of the National Ignition Facility and Optics Refurbishment Center

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is the size of a sports stadium—three football fields could fit inside. NIF’s unique energy and power enable cutting-edge research to help keep America safe and secure, explore new frontiers of science, and lay the groundwork for a clean, sustainable source of energy. In December 2022, NIF made history with nuclear ignition, achieving the first controlled fusion reaction that produced more energy than it took to initiate. We will also be touring the optics processing facilities where many of the state-of-the-art NIF optics are processed onsite as well as the optics mitigation facility, where damages on optics are “erased”, allowing the optics to be reused multiple times.
