Silicon Photonics Lab to Fab-Powering a CPO Consortium for High Volume Manufacturing

Abstract

Co-packaged optics (CPO) is emerging as a critical technology for overcoming the bandwidth, power, and signal-integrity limitations of conventional electrical interconnects in next-generation AI Data Centres and high-performance computing systems including the flavour of quantum security. However, moving CPO from promising laboratory demonstrations to reliable, cost-effective high-volume manufacturing requires more than advances in individual components - it requires coordinated innovation across the entire value chain. The presentation will go over the demonstrated capabilities with silicon photonics PDK library, functional PIC designs, fabrication and testing capabilities including the industry's first chip-scale high-speed Silicon Photonics Quantum Random Number Generator, at Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS IIT Madras. A consortium model, with potentially 4-6 partners, in which each partner contributes a differentiated capability while maintaining a clear path toward shared demonstrations and commercial deployment will be discussed. University of Arizona and IIT Madras can serve as complementary research anchors, while industrial partners provide customer-driven requirements, manufacturing expertise, equipment, materials, and heterogeneous/thermal packaging technologies. The ultimate goal is to establish a CPO innovation and manufacturing ecosystem capable of taking promising CPO technologies from laboratory readiness to qualified, scalable, high-volume production, while creating opportunities in innovation for students, researchers, startups, and established semiconductor and photonics companies.

Bio

Prof. Bijoy Krishna Das obtained MSc degree in solid-state physics from Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, India (in 1996) and Ph.D. degree (Dr.rer.nat) in integrated optics from the University of Paderborn, Germany (in April 2003). Prior to his Ph.D. research in Germany, Prof. Das started his research career in the area of integrated optics at the Microelectronics Centre, IIT Kharagpur for three years (January 1996 – December 1998). His postdoctoral research was carried out in three different countries First, he was an FRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan (2004-2005). Later, he joined as a postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Optical Technologies, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA. In April 2005, he re-joined the Integrated Optics Group at the University of Paderborn as Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter and continued his research on integrated nonlinear optical devices. He also worked for a while at Laboratoire Aime Cotton, CNRS, Orsay, France. Since August 2006, Prof. Das has been associated with the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, where he is presently holding a full Professor position with higher academic grade (HAG). At IIT Madras, Prof. Das has been dedicated to establishing state-of-the-art silicon photonics research ecosystems following the Product Research Development and Manufacturing (PRDM) model for indigenously developed Co-Packaged Optics Transceiver Engine, Quantum Photonic Integrated Circuits (Q-PICs) and Microwave Photonic Integrated Circuits, etc. Prof. Das is the founder and Chief Investigator of the Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS IIT Madras.
