Today, we will be joined by Dr. Ben Cromey, alumni of OSC and Optica ambassador. He will be discussing resume and interview preparation for Industrial Affiliates, which is taking place Monday - Wednesday of next week.
In addition, Dr. Cromey has kindly offered to provide mock interviews throughout the day this Friday, October 25, ranging from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM before the talk, and then 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM after the talk. In addition,
- Dr. Koshel will be giving interviews 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM then 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
- Dr. Mike Nofziger will be giving interviews 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
There are three styles of interviews being offered:
- Personality or "general" interview: "Tell me about a time you had to deal with conflict on a team"
- Academic: focused on how you'd lead a research group, what your teaching philosophy is, etc
- Tech company: you'll be asked questions about a problem or idea that you'll reason through during the interview, to showcase your critical thinking skills on the fly.
You will be asked to specify your availability, what type of interview you would like to receive, and if you have any preferences about who gives you the interview. We are planning for the interviews to last 20 minutes (which will be 30 slots total), but may reduce this to 15 minutes (40 slots total) if enough students sign up. These will be first come/first serve, but we will do our best to accommodate as many students as possible.

Talk Abstract:
Come prepare for Industrial Affiliates with Optica Ambassador Dr. Benjamin Cromey and learn about resumes and interviewing from his perspective out in industry! In this interactive presentation, attendees will look at real anonymized resumes to discuss the pros and cons of how the information there is presented. Participants are encouraged to bring their own resume to trade with those around them to see how much information can be gleaned in only ten seconds (a common amount of time at a career fair). Finally, a few generic types of interviews will be discussed. General advice for both resumes and interviewing will be presented.
