We are happy to invite everyone to a mental health talk with Caleb W. Baker, optical engineer at JPL and this week's colloquium speaker.
We know some of you have classes, others will be gone for the long weekend, and some are distance students. To make this accessible for everyone and have this talk as a resource you can come back to, we are recording this talk and uploading to the OSC Youtube channel. So stay tuned for the recording!
Talk description:
Psychological studies consistently show that high achieving individuals in STEM fields face much higher prevalence of psychological challenges when compared to the general population. And yet despite this, mental health and psychological wellbeing are still not commonly discussed amongst STEM students and practitioners, allowing for unfortunate stigmas and common misconceptions to persist. Please join me for an hour as I walk through some prevalence studies and specific effects and constructs surrounding the psychological challenges specific to STEM graduate school and working at a place like NASA, mix in a fair bit of levity and personal stories from my own history so I can hopefully avoid contributing to the statistics which I am discussing, and answer any questions that you all may have.
Light refreshments provided
There will be time for questions afterward!
All are welcomed as always 😊
