The Optical Data Storage Graduate Student Scholarship was established under the leadership of Masud Mansuripur, Professor and Chair of Optical Data Storage at the College of Optical Sciences. A Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the International Society for Optics & Photonics (SPIE), Dr. Mansuripur has published four books and over 250 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and presented numerous invited talks at international conferences, universities, and major industrial laboratories. His research interests include magnetic, optical, and molecular data storage, classical optics and electrodynamics, and problems associated with radiation pressure.

Also contributing to this endowment were several faculty members, research scientists, and industry partners, whose participation attests to the value of advancing innovation in the field of Optical Data Storage.

Optical Data Storage refers to the science and technology of recording and readout of digital information using laser light. Compact Audio Discs (CDs) and Digital Versatile Discs (DVDs) are examples of media that store digital music and video, which can subsequently be played back with the help of a sharply-focused laser beam.

Spurred on by its reliability, affordability, and manufacturing flexibility, Optical Data Storage technology is expected to continue its growth and market penetration into the future. To help ensure that this growth will be led by highly trained researchers and engineers, the Optical Data Storage Graduate Student Scholarship is awarded to graduate students at the College of Optical Sciences whose talents and technical interests uniquely qualify them for advancing innovations in this challenging field of study.

Eligibility: 

The ODS Scholarship is open to talented first-year OSC graduate students from around the world, and selection is based on academic excellence. Ideally the candidate will have an expressed interest in the study and research of Optical Data Storage technology and have a 3.7 or better GPA on a 4.0 scale. Participation in extracurricular activities is also recommended.
