Beginning at SPIE Optics + Photonics 2025 will be a new biennial astronomy symposium on current and emerging applications for ground and space telescopes, and other optical technologies. According to SPIE, this Symposium will serve as complementary to the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation event and will run in odd-numbered years. It will encompass the current five conferences with the intent to welcome further topics as applicable.

Daewook Kim, associate professor of optical sciences, and Allison Barto, BAE Systems, Inc., are the first 2025 Symposium Chairs. So far, included conference topics are: UV/Optical/IR Space Telescopes and Instruments: Innovative Technologies and Concepts, Astronomical Optics: Design, Manufacture, and Test of Space and Ground Systems, UV, X-Ray, and Gamma-Ray Space Instrumentation for Astronomy, Optics for EUV, X-Ray, and Gamma-Ray Astronomy, and Techniques and Instrumentation for Detection of Exoplanets.
