Jim Schwiegerling, PhD (OSC 1995) dedicated his career to pioneering advancements in optical engineering, particularly in the realm of ophthalmic applications. In 2020, Jim was awarded to the prestigious appointment of the Robert R. Shannon Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences.
He published 117 archival journal and proceedings papers, seven book chapters, and three books including the popular SPIE “Field Guide to Visual and Ophthalmic Optics.”
Widely recognized as a remarkable champion of students as a teacher and advisor, he supervised 40 MS and 19 PhD students at the College. Several more of his students continued their studies after Jim’s passing in April 2023 from a valiant battle with cancer in which he prevailed for many years.
This scholarship was established by the Schwiegerling family—his wife, Diana, and children, Max and Marie—and serves to commemorate Jim’s profound impact on both education and research within the optics community.
