Dr. Joshua Gordon Named AMTA Edmond S. Gillespie Fellow
Dr. Joshua Gordon (Wyant College of Optical Sciences PhD, 2008) was named an AMTA (Antenna Measurement Techniques Association) Edmond S. Gillespie Fellow and received a plaque recognizing the honor at the AMTA annual conference that recently took place in Seattle. Dr. Gordon obtained his PhD in optical sciences in 2008 under the advisement of Dr. Richard Ziolkowski.
Today, Dr. Gordon is a physicist in the RF Technology Division at NIST, and his research areas focus on investigating new technologies and approaches for robotics, spatial metrology, antenna metrology, RF electric-field, and power metrology. These include pioneering robotic-based antenna metrology approaches, optical techniques for antenna alignment, Rydberg atom-based electric-field and RF power metrology, and Rydberg atom antennas.
Dr. Gordon’s research has sought to explore the boundaries of knowledge from outside the discipline of antenna metrology to make radical changes and advancements in the state-of -the-art in antenna measurements and electromagnetic metrology. Dr. Gordon is an Edmond S. Gillespie Fellow of the Antenna Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA) and a Senior Member of the IEEE. His work has been published in book chapters and over 100 research papers for the advancement of antenna measurements and electromagnetic metrology.
He is also listed as the inventor on several patents related to spatial metrology technologies with applications to antenna alignment and robot and robotic antenna range calibration as well as Rydberg atom based electric-field sensing. Dr. Gordon’s work in robotics for use in mm-Wave antenna measurement applications was recognized by the US Department of Commerce, receiving the 2016 US Department of Commerce Silver Medal for work on developing the Configurable Robotic Millimeter-Wave Antenna Range (CROMMA). Dr. Gordon’s work in Rydberg atom-based sensors has also been highly recognized receiving the 2023 Department of Commerce Gold Medal and highest-honor Ron Brown Excellence in Innovation Award.
Dr. Gordon's advisor, Dr. Ziolkowski, said of the honor, "Josh, Awesome news! Congratulations!! ~ DrZ" With shared enthusiasm, Wyant College of Optical Sciences also says, Congratulations, Dr. Gordon!
