Dr. Felipe Guzmán Returns to Wyant College of Optical Sciences as Jack Lee Jewell Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences
The Wyant College of Optical Sciences is pleased to welcome Prof. Felipe Guzmán back, now, as the chairholder of the Jack Lee Jewell Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences. Prof. Guzmán previously served as an Associate Professor of Optical Sciences at the Wyant College of Optical Sciences before his time at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Even after moving to TAMU, Prof. Guzmán maintained his ties with the Wyant College by continuing as an Adjunct Professor.
Returning with a wealth of experience gained during his time at TAMU, Prof. Guzmán brings his expertise and continually expanding research lab back to our local community. Prof. Guzmán has worked to advance the state-of-the-art research in novel optomechanical inertial sensors, precision laser interferometry, and optical technologies for ground and space applications. His research spans gravitational-wave astrophysics, geosciences, navigation, and precision metrology.
While at TAMU, Prof. Guzmán was an Associate Professor with the departments of Aerospace Engineering and Physics & Astronomy as well as the Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Space Systems and Optomechanics (LASSO) research group. His accomplished career includes roles at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as part of the Joint Quantum Institute, and the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics.
Prof. Guzmán's contributions include multiple patents in optomechanical inertial sensing technologies and optical metrology studies. As the inaugural holder of the Jack Lee Jewell Endowed Chair, established by the visionary Dr. Jack Jewell who is renowned for his seminal contributions to VCSELs (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers), the chair’s inspiration aligns seamlessly with Prof. Guzmán's commitment to advancing extreme optical technologies through cutting-edge research.
"We extend a warm welcome to Prof. Guzmán in his distinguished role as holder of the Jack Lee Jewell Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences. His expertise in optomechanical inertial sensors, precision laser interferometry, and optical technologies will spearhead important new directions in our college, and we look forward to his leadership in shaping the future of optical sciences at our institution," said Thomas L. Koch, PhD, dean of the Wyant College of Optical Sciences.
Welcome back and Congratulations, Prof. Guzmán!
