Title

Integrated Polymer Photonics:  Enabling the Ubiquitous Optical Network

Abstract

Polymers occupy an increasingly important role in the optics that we use everyday, most notably in vision correction and consumer electronics.  Optical polymers and related hybrid materials are now poised to impact the ever expanding optical network that enables our 21st century lives.  We will review recent advances made by our group, together with the Pyun group, in optical materials and devices for applications including optical interconnections, nonlinear photonics, infrared imaging and magneto-optics.

Speaker Bio

Robert A. Norwood is a Professor in the Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, where he performs research on photonic materials and devices.  Dr. Norwood spent 15 years in R&D leadership positions in industry at both Fortune 100 corporations (AlliedSignal now Honeywell) and venture-capital backed startups (VP/CTO of Photon-X).  He founded Norcon Technologies in 2017 to commercialize novel hybrid chalcogenide optical polymers developed at the University of Arizona.  He is a world expert in integrated optics and nonlinear optical materials, with more than 195 refereed publications, 7 book chapters, 43 issued US patents, and 85 invited talks.   Dr. Norwood has served on the program committees for OFC (sub-committee chair) and CLEO.  He has been an associate editor of OpticaIEEE Photonics Technology Letters and Optical Materials Express.  Dr. Norwood is a Fellow of Optica, SPIE and the National Academy of Inventors, as well as a member of APS and IEEE.  He holds the Ph.D. in physics from the University of Pennsylvania, and B.S.'s in physics and mathematics from MIT.
